Alternative Methods of Animal Identification
The known methods of establishing the identify of animals such as branding, tattoing, ear tagging, and ear notching are generally unsatisfactory. They can be tampered, duplicated or imitated and are objectionable in several ways due to the pain and tissue mutilation inflicted on the animals. From the standpoint of veterinary jurisprudence especially when the claim of ownership of a prized animal is under question, an infallible means of identificaion is necessary such as muzzle and palatine printing. Moreover, from the standpoint of sound livestock management, a proper procedure for identification of valuable animals is necessary. The two methods developed, muzzle and palatine printing, are simple, cheap and reliable and could be applied for local use.
