Desmanthus (Desmanthus virgatus) as Supplement to Stargrass for Growing Goats
Desmanthus, a leguminous shrub, is a promising substitute for concentrates. Growing female goats can be fed with stargrass supplemented with Desmanthus at the rate of 0.05% BW. The inclusion of Desmanthus in the stargrass diet results to higher organic matter intake. Average daily gain is also higher with Desmanthus and with increasing supplementation levels. As supplementation increases, daily feed cost decreases slightly while cost per unit gain decreases sharply with Desmanthus use. Desmanthus can be planted and grown along the fence line and marginal lands not used for crops as a source of supplemental feeds for goats’ milk and meat production.
