Sustainable Small Ruminant Production on Stargrass-based Pasture Under Coconuts |
---|
This technology makes use of vast coconut plantations for the production of meat and milk from goats and sheep. Under coconuts, stargrass can be planted and incorporated with existing vegetation. Fodder trees like dapdap (Erythrina orientalis), katuray (Sesbania grandiflora) and kakawate (Gliricidia sepium) can be planted as live posts in fencelines and also serve as source of roughage. This system allows more efficient utilization of the vegetation and allows free movement of animals, exercise, natural breeding and most importantly, feed selection, resulting in higher consumption of nutritious portions of the forage compared to tethering.
