Bugtok IPM Technology
‘Bugtok’ is a disease of ‘Saba’ or ‘Candaba’ banana that normally makes the fruit unfit for eating. It is caused by a bacteria transmitted by flower visiting insects or by contaminated tools. ‘Bugtok’ is a major problem in ‘Saba’ plantations in the Visayas and Mindanao, causing crop losses as high as 70%, which lead to virtual abandonment of plantations. The ‘Bugtok’ IPM Technology is an integrated management approach using tactics of sustained early debugging, sanitary practices and fruit bagging. The ‘Bugtok’ IPM technology results to significant economic benefits and ‘Saba’ farmers who used the technology obtained significant additional income on a per hectare basis.
