Mestisa 1 Loofah
‘Mestisa 1’ loofah is a very vigorous intespecific hybrid produced from a cross between a smooth and ridged patola with bitter fruits. It is semi-ridged with good fiber compactness. It is highly suitable for sponge fiber (loofah) production only. It has a sponge mean length of 43 cm, mean diameter of 7.7 cm, and mean thickness of 0.9 cm. It flowers 62 days after planting and the first mature brown fruits (for loofah) can be harvested 119 days or two months from pollination. It is more resistant to melon fly (Dacus cucurbitae) under field conditions than its smooth or ridged parents.
