Control Strategy for Banana Bunchy Top
Banana bunchy top (BBT) is one of the most important viruses that affect the Musa family. Transmitted by a brown aphid called Pentalonia nigronervosa, it its symptom is characterized by rosette appearance with narrow, upright and progressively shorter leaves. To control BBT, virus-free planting materials or plants derived from tissue culture are used. Infected plants are removed immediately and insecticides are regularly applied to control aphids. This control strategy improves the status of banana farms which have been infected by BBT and “bugtok’ diseases, thus improving the socio-economic situation of banana farmers.
