Bulk Modified Atmosphere Storage of Tomato
Modified atmosphere (MA) storage is an effective method of extending shelf life of tomato with or without the use of refrigeration. Bulk MA storage uses polyethylene film made into tent to enclose the fruits packed in plastic crates. As a result, ripening is slowed down and shelf life is extended. With bulk MA storage, tomatoes will ripen 21 days with an average recovery of acceptable fruits at 85%. Potential users who can benefit from this technology are farmers and traders who wish to store their fruits during periods of peak supply or low price but do not have access to cold storage facilities.
