Nano-structured filter beads from Rice Hulls for Use in Removal of Arsenic from Drinking Water
Rice hulls/rice hull ash modified with iron were processed to form nanostructured beads that can remove arsenic, both As(III) and As(V) from contaminated water by using an efficient and cost-effective way. Arsenic is a metalloid that has a maximum contamination limit of 10 ng/L (10ppb) in drinking water based on guidelines set by WHO, US EPA and Philippine FDA. At this level, the associated cancer risk is 1 in 500 people. Arsenic has been strongly linked to cancer of the skin, kidneys, lungs and liver as well as to increased incidence of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
