The Oils and Fats Laboratory specializes in the establishment of bioextraction processes, chemical analysis and characterization, and biocatalyzed modification for the production of functionalized specialty fats and oils extracted from different oilseeds such as pili, malunggay, avocado and others.
The laboratory conducts PCR-based testing for Salmonella in food and feed, as well as determination of antioxidant activity and enzyme (phytase, mannanase, protease) activity.
The Bio-Organic Fertilizer (BOF) Laboratory performs research and development of microbial-based fertilizers. It has developed microbial inoculants technology for efficient conversion of agro-industrial wastes into quality biofertilizers as low-cost agricultural farm input.
The NanoBiotechnology Laboratory (NBL) is one of the newest laboratories established by the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BIOTECH), University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB).

The HPI Laboratory is a plant pathology research and teaching laboratory that caters to students, staff, government offices, public and private clients in need of technical assistance in basic and/or advanced diagnostics and management of plant diseases. In the past seven years, the laboratory has pioneered the development of easy diagnostics for viral, fungal, and bacterial pathogens of high-value crops such as orchids, cacao, mango, and high-value vegetables. Its services include disease diagnosis of ornamentals, fruit crops, and vegetables; training on serological and molecular diagnostics of orchid viruses; and training on disease diagnosis (cacao, mango, and high-value vegetables).
The SESAM Environmental Laboratory can offer a limited number of services, most instruments are for onsite testing. The laboratory, with its small space, is used mainly for sample processing and analyses requirements of the School’s students, researchers, and faculty members. Although, it has also provided services for other parties, including students and researchers from other colleges and universities, local government units, and local communities.
In response to the water security challenges of our country, UPLB formalized the establishment of the Interdisciplinary Studies Center for Water as part of its interdisciplinary research thrust to RDE programs. UPLB Interdisciplinary Studies Center for Water envisions to be a center of excellence in research, development, and extension towards water security for all. The center seeks to generate science-based information for efficient, equitable and sustainable management of water resources. The center’s goal is to sustainably manage water resources for national development through interdisciplinary research, responsive policy, partnership, and capacity-building.
This is a graduate studies laboratory for water-related research. The group, which consists of water specialists and experts from various fields and graduate students with research specialization in water, focuses on mentoring graduate students in keeping track of their research.
The Postharvest Horticulture Training and Research Center (PHTRC) Laboratory can generate basic data such as morpho-anatomy, biochemistry, pathology and entomology, postharvest physiology, biotechnology, and engineering of tropical horticultural crops. UPLB students specializing in Postharvest Horticulture, or those taking postharvest courses also have access to these facilities. Some services are provided, subject to approval and availability of personnel and equipment.
