UP Los Baños (UPLB) through the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension (OVCRE), Institute of Plant Breeding and Agricultural Systems Institute (ASI) of the College of Agriculture and Food Science (CAFS), and the Ugnayan ng Pahinungod conducted a seminar on seed propagation and management for 200 farmers of Albay municipalities Ligao, Camalig, Libon and Polangui last 14 to 15 March 2019.
The UPLB team also distributed 1000 packs of vegetable seedlings to members of local farmer and women organizations. The public service initiative is part of UPLB’s commitment to the recovery of disaster-stricken areas of Albay which was facilitated by the UP Resilient Institute (UPRI) for areas affected by the phreatic eruption of Mt. Mayon last January 2018 and was eventually expanded to include municipalities devastated by Typhoon Usman last December 2018.
Additional seminars on livestock production and climate-smart agriculture in partnership with local DA and DRR offices are in the pipeline as part of continuing interventions that will mobilize other UPLB units and resources in support of medium-term disaster rehabilitation in the locale.
The UPLB delegation to Albay was composed of Mr. Glenn S. Lubuguin, Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension and Director of UPLB Pahinungod, Dr. Hospicio Natural, Dr. Nestor Garcia, Mr. Rene Limosinero, Ms. Maria Emblem Grulla of ASI-CAFS, Mr. Jose Limbay Lahi Espaldon of Pahinungod, and Mr. Jose Elmo Azores of OVCRE.
