Science and the arts crossed paths as various UPLB units collaborated to host “Salubungang Agos/Cross Currents in the Streams of Creative Expressions: A Fusion of the Arts and Climate Change Science.”  Students and faculty from the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) School of Community and Regional Planning also participated in the event which took place at the CAS Auditorium last 10 July 2015.

Salubungang Agos started with a plenary session with a line-up of speakers that include: Dr. Felino P. Lansigan, Dean of UPLB’s College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), who discussed UPLB’s Climate Change research efforts; Dr. Leonora Angeles-Foster, professor from UBC, who talked about the issues and challenges in institution and capacity-building of Philippine local government units for climate solutions; and Prof. Victor Emmanuel Carmelo D. Nadera Jr. from the Philippine High School for the Arts who discussed SiyenSining which is the combination of science and the arts.

Following the plenary session, the participants – students from both UPLB and UBC – travelled to the Makiling Botanic Gardens for a workshop wherein they shared stories and ideas about climate change. After the workshop, the participants headed back to the CAS Auditorium for the event’s culminating activity: a concert entitled “Salubong sa Agos ng Pagbabago.”  As part of the concert, the participants gathered on stage to sing the song that they wrote during the workshop.
