Enzyme Biotechnology for Essential Oil Production from Different Plant Sources
This is a technology which uses locally produced pectinase in extracting essential oils from patchouli leaves (Pogostemon cablin), lemongrass leaves (Cymbopogon citrates), citronella leaves (Cymbopogon winterianus) and ilang-ilang flowers (Canañga odorata). The pectinase degrades the pectic substances in the leaves to release the oil-containing globules, thus, increasing the oil yield. Essential oils obtained from this process are of good quality and the yield is much higher compared to the traditional hydro-steam distillation process.
