As part of their continuous effort to increase awareness of UPLB constituents on intellectual property (IP), the UPLB Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (TTBDO) began a week-long webinar on patent searching on 16 November 2020.
Titled “Learning the Art of Patent Searching”, the webinar targets researchers and faculty who have existing studies or ideas that may result to the development of a technology or invention.
As TTBDO's event partner, IP experts from the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) are training the participants from UPLB, Palawan State University, and University of Visayas on conducting the patent information search.
Patent search confirms if an invention is novel which is one of the conditions that must be met for a technology to be patented.
TTBDO Director Glenn Baticados said patent searching is an "important skill for any researcher" and an important stage in technology protection and utilization.
Aside from determining the novelty of an invention, patent search avoids duplication of research studies, thereby saving time and resources, Director Baticados added.
According to IPOPHL's Engr. Wilfredo Calaguan, the webinar aims to guide the participants while recognizing the importance of IP rights and patent search in developing new technologies. It will also teach them to utilize patent information and assess appropriate IP protection to technologies.
Aside from the discussions, the participants will also conduct patent search and write an invention search report using their own inventions or ideas.
Before ending his opening remarks, Director Baticados offered TTBDO's assistance with IP applications.
"Don't hesitate to approach us, if you need any help, mentoring, or support. We are really eager to be of assistance to you," he said.
The webinar is until 24 November 2020.
