In order to come up with 10 research papers for journal publication, the Coconut Genomics Project 8 under the Philippine Genome Center (PGC) - Agriculture Program conducted a writing workshop last 20 August 2018 at the Boy Scouts of the Philippines Hotel, University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), College, Laguna.
UPLB Professor Emeritus and the first PGC - Agriculture director Dr. Rita P. Laude opened the event by highlighting the importance of publishing journals for the Coconut Genomics Project and the general public. In her words, publication is a "moral obligation" to the public who pay taxes that supply the government funds for research projects.
This was supported by National Scientist and UPLB Professor Emeritus Dr. Dolores Ramirez. “You owe it to the scientific community and yourselves to communicate your outputs. It shall never be allowed to gather dust”, Dr. Ramirez said. She also recalled how her mentor's encouragement pushed her to collate her research data and turn it into a paper within a month.
