UPLB builds academic and research collab with University of Twente

In a bid to concretize our research and academic collaboration with partner institutions, Chancellor Fernando C. Sanchez Jr., together with Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Portia G. Lapitan, Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension Rex B. Demafelis, and University Extension Specialist Maria Rowena Beatriz Q. Inzon, EnP, met with officials and faculty from the University of Twente (UT) in Enschede, Netherlands.

UP System REPS Committee meets with UPLB REPS

Around 400 Research, Extension, and Professional Staff (REPS) of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) gathered at the Electrical Engineering Auditorium, College of Engineering and Agro-industrial Technology last 11 September 2018 to attend the Consultation with the UP System REPS Committee.

Themed “Updates on Policy Reforms for Progressive UP REPS Governance” the consultation aimed to be a venue to discuss initiatives, policies, and concerns of the REPS sector. Hon. Francis C. Laurel from the Board of Regents graced the event with his presence as he provided an inspirational message to the participants.

OVCRE and GC collaborate on building a gender sensitive community of information officers

In a bid to bring together university communicators in building a gender sensitive community of practice, the OVCRE and the UPLB Gender Center collaborated in the conduct of a two-day workshop held last 6-7 September 2019 at Lima Park Hotel, Malvar, Batangas.

With the theme "Building a Gender Sensitive Community of Practice," the first day of the workshop highlighted the experiences of each communicator in the management of their print or online publications. The sharing session conveyed editorial processes, best practices, and challenges faced by each publication. Members of the OVCRE Information Officers’ Network (ION) imparted skills and appreciation of basic and emerging trends in content layout and photojournalism through interactive and participatory activities. They also tackled the Data Privacy Act, Intellectual Property Management and the UP guidelines on publications.

UPLB Coconut Genomics Project team conducts publication writeshop

In order to come up with 10 research papers for journal publication, the Coconut Genomics Project 8 under the Philippine Genome Center (PGC) - Agriculture Program conducted a writing workshop last 20 August 2018 at the Boy Scouts of the Philippines Hotel, University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), College, Laguna.

UPLB Professor Emeritus and the first PGC - Agriculture director Dr. Rita P. Laude opened the event by highlighting the importance of publishing journals for the Coconut Genomics Project and the general public. In her words, publication is a "moral obligation" to the public who pay taxes that supply the government funds for research projects.

This was supported by National Scientist and UPLB Professor Emeritus Dr. Dolores Ramirez. “You owe it to the scientific community and yourselves to communicate your outputs. It shall never be allowed to gather dust”, Dr. Ramirez said. She also recalled how her mentor's encouragement pushed her to collate her research data and turn it into a paper within a month.

UPLB responds to rice grain bug infestation in Negros Occidental

UPLB visited Negros Occidental last 17-18 February 2018 to help address the rice grain bug (Paraeucosmetus pallicornis) infestation in the province. Led by the National Crop Protection Center - Quick Response Team (NCPC-QRT) and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension (OVCRE), the UPLB team assessed the extent of the infestation in the towns of Himamaylan, Sipalay and Hinoba-an.

UPLB holds groundbreaking for Technology Hub and One-Stop Shop

As part of its objectives to create an enabling environment for creativity and innovation, the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) will finally have its very own Technology Hub and One-Stop Shop. This is a project funded by the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR), spearheaded by the UPLB Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension (OVCRE), and implemented by UPLB Foundation, Inc (UPLB FI).

UPLB prepares roadmap for national water security

The Philippines has been struggling with serious water issues and little, by way of a nationally concerted effort, is being done to aggressively address the problems.

Thus is the rationale for the UPLB project “Towards A Comprehensive National Plan For Water Security (Roadmap Preparations).” Funded by the National Water Resources Board (NWRB), the project aimed to formulate a National Water Security Roadmap in the context of climate change and globalization.
